Taking care of my Pet Beetle: Oryctes Rhinoceros

I recently came into possession of an Oryctes Rhinoceros beetle.

When I first got it, it was very lively so I plopped it down into a food container and did some research on the internet on what it ate.

I found out you could give it sliced bananas and apples. So I placed a piece of banana into its container. It didn’t touch it at all. It kept on walking round and round the container…

I went to bed and the next day, the banana wasn’t touched at all. The beetle looked visibly weaker.

After some consulation with a beetle keeping expert, I found out that I should have covered the transparent container with something to make it dark inside. Beetles like to hide.

I covered it with a black shirt, no luck, beetle didn’t eat at all.

After some more research, I found out you could feed it beetle jelly or if you’re in a pinch, regular jelly with natural fruit juice.

So I went and bought 2 kinds of jelly.

The first one, a natural lychee conjac jelly was soundly ignored. The second type, a cheaper jelly with no vitamins whatsoever was also ignored.

I finally got my hands on some coconut noir to use as substrate. A sudden change came over the beetle as soon as I dumped the coconut noir in. It immeadiately buried itself in the substrate.. It seemed to get revitalized!

I put in a jelly and a piece of banana. The next day, I found the beetle with its head in the jelly happily munching away. (poor banana, ignored once again!)

Finally It's eating!

Tips I can share for freshly caught beetles:

1. Have some substrate ready for your pet beetle, preferably some of the wood of the trees where it lives. It loves those. It will get stressed if you don’t have any substrate ready for it and you placed it in an empty container. Moisten the substrate with a little water but not too much water.

2. Be sure to cover the cage with something dark but make sure that there are holes so oxygen can come through. Your beetle is probably scared and shy at this point and would like some privacy.

3. Leave the food like bananas, apple, jelly in a empty space or where the beetle can easily get to it. OBSERVE closely if it gets eaten. The beetle will come out at night and eat the food if it is hungry.

4. Don’t handle your beetle as much as possible. It will get stressed.

5. You don’t need to buy expensive beetle jelly. Just buy jelly that is soft and contains natural fruit juice, natural sugars and vitamins.

6. Change the food when it looks like its getting spoiled. If the beetle is still eating it, don’t change it! Wait until the beetle leaves the food and then change it. Good luck in taking care of your pet beetle!

Ok, these beetles live in coconut trees and they come out at night. They can be found during the summer season and can be easily picked up off the ground because they have a habit of flying toward porch/house lights.

It’s the rainy season now in the Philippines so you’re going to have a hard time looking for these beetles. During the rainy season they stay in their burrows hear the tops of the coconut trees to feed off the sap.

whoa thanks men! umm.. i have some questions again though! sorry If I’m giving you a hard time answering.. umm about the food they eat> do they eat jelly ace? usually sold on sari-sari stores? or there is a really specialized jelly for them? and one more thing, what about the wood shavings on their containers? is it just a wood shavings or you also have to put some sort of specialized wood or any sor tof substrate? thanks!!

Don’t worry, it’s actually pretty easy to answer these questions.

Yes, you can feed them jellyace, in fact, they prefer to eat jellyace than banana. The jellyace contains water and moisture for them. Alternate feeding Jellyace and banana to make sure that they don’t dehydrate.

Get the jellyace which has vitamins. It can easily be bought in any grocery or 7-11. 10 pieces for about 20 pesos.

As for substrate, go to handyman or any hardware or planting supply store and buy something called COCONUT NOIR. It’s chips made up of coconut husks and it makes your beetle (who came from a coconut tree) feel more at home. It’s extremely cheap.

No. They do not need refrigeration. Plus, if they’re cold, the beetle won’t even go near them or try to taste it.

he’s probably dehydrated or very weak from hunger.

Possibly he has been lying on his back too long and his organs have gotten permanent damage.

the jelly that you provide them has water in it. You can also dissolve a little maple syrup in a very shallow dish of water (they might drown in it.)

– Yes, however they live near the top of the coconut palm where the leaves are so it’s very hard to get them. Your best bet to find one is during summer when they are attracted to bright lights of houses. Just pick them up under the light.

You can use normal soil BUT coconut wood adds to the comfort level of the beetle and it decreases stress. The beetle will live longer and feel more at home on coconut wood.

You’d have to climb to the top of the coconut PALM. Then you have to check for holes in the base of the leaves at the top. VERY HARD to do.

If you have a house near a lot of coconut trees, the easiest way to attract them is to have a bright porch light outside. They will fly towards it and sometimes fall on their backs. Then in the morning you can pick them up.

Dissolve the sugar in water first and give very little of the sugar water in a shallow bowl. USE very little water or they might drown!

You started this in Feb, hows the beetle doing these days, has it survived this long in captivity?

Living on Boracay gives me unique access to exotic wildlife pets like hermit, sand, land crabs, crazy beetles, dinner-plate sized spiders, massive tokoy geckos, and enough close-in sealife to fill a mall.

Most online knowledge is from the POV of casual pet owners with details like pet shop supplies and humidity/temp control to lighting…. which doesnt exist here.

You posted some local remedies I’ll try for my newest apartment visitor, the coconut rhino beetle. Theres already a large aquarium used for small hermit crabs and the beetle simply burrows under everything, occasionally flying out and scaring the crap out of me at night, (too lazy to make a lid).

When it comes to coconut substrate stuff, its all over here so I’ll shred some waterlogged coconut husk from the beach and toss bits of rotted trunk in there. Might do a half sand/ half coconut material tank… its freaking huge.

ahh remembered my first beetle….too bad they only use their horns by digging into the coconut trees…..not in beetle fights…you live in bacolod right? go up in the mountains in summer theres a chance you might get a nice stag beetle (odontolabis intermedia) nice size too, largest is around 100mm it’s like twice as the size of your beetle…..anyway keep looking for beetles around you might get a xylotrupes gideon…..oh yeah a correction they don’t sell these specie in japan they only sell the ones that are interesting like the larger ones example Dynastes Hercules most of of the time costing like thousand of yen
they more likely to have the ones that have scarier and larger horns because most people in japan really like beetle fights…….

for people that asks questions…..
I think the only countries that sells beetles are japan and taiwan…..yes you can see them in the wild mostly n provinces if you live in a city the chances are like 0%

tips on catching some beetles….
wake up at like 5:30 – 9:00 in the morning shake small trees or larger one if you can, you can see some beetles falling, then pick them up immediately so they won’t have a chance to fly….

night time catching……If you’re living in a province some beetles will fly around lights or street lamps too pretty easy……

If you cant differentiate, try looking at the place of origin of the beetle, and try sending pictures to the Smithsonian museum..

the first thing you always do is identify the beetle. Then once you identify the beetle you can try giving it food that it likes.

Try bananas or watermelon/canteloupe.

You have to identify the type of beetle. Identify it so you can do research and give it the proper food.

no. You can’t catch a beetle in manila and in a condo. Very rare. They like living in coconut trees.. It’s summer so it’s the time when the coconut sap is rich and sweet. Try looking at the bottom of lamp posts or lights near coconut trees in the morning. They are attracted to light so they fly to these lights and get tired and in the morning you can catch them easily

You can use ordinary Jelly. You have to look for jelly that has real fruit juice as one of its ingredients and has lots of vitamins

i have 2 chalcosoma atlas( 4 inches) and 5 xylutrupes gideon ulysses (2.2 inches). been feeding them with ripe banana..yup they very like it as well as carrots, tomatoe and singkamas. ive placed them in plastic biscuit box with holes for air, putting some old or nearly rotten logs, naturally the inside of the box moisten due to humidity (i also read that rhinos have the capability of bringing their home to their desired temperature). they ate whatever i fed them as i mentioned.bad thing happened after i cleaned up their container. i transferred them to another empty container without subtrate (soil, rotten logs).my bad, due to busy on something i forgot to bring them back to their original container. as i got back to them after few hours i found them weaken/stressed due to prolong lying on their back. now they’re under observation..hoping they’ll recover. i’ve been rearing them almost a month already. but it’s a learning experience, next time i know what to do to avoid them geeting stressed. if they’ll not survived i have to wait again for next season, usually they come out after the rain. anyway im from philippines also, working at place where forest is still dense..no wonder i could easily just pick this guys along my driveway at night.i have pix of my rhinos on my http://www.sulit.com.ph ad, just search and you will see.

Hey! I catch 2 beetles on the same kind this morning flying in front of our house I dont know how you call them they are long and they look like female because they dont have horns for fighting they have horn but its like soft horn like an antennae.. I searched “beetles found in the Philippines” on google and found it.. my beetles currently look nice because of your advice.. I put them on a medium size container with tamarind leaves because i use to see beetles on tamarind tree when I was young . I also bought jellyace for their food and they enjoyed it ! but unfortunately I cant catch more beetles anymore because the farm near our subdivision was also destructed they also made it a subdivision which is not good.. I want to catch an ATLAS BEETLE !! Found only on boracay. I wish I could have alot when i grew up specially my favorite. Armored stag beetle, Japanese beetle, and HERCULES BEETLE

Good afternoon. Sir Martin, Thank you very much for this information. This blog will help me a lot more in maintaining my pet beetles in good health. As of now I have six pairs of philippine rhino beettle in my position and luckily, two of them already laid eggs of approximately 50 to 60 eggs each pair. I am expecting that the babies rhino beetle will expel from the eggs soon to become larvae. Like you, I am also using coconut husk as substrate in the bin cages for my pet bettles but aside from that, I am also using coconut leaves in addition to make the bin cages darker inside for them to feel more comfortable. once again, Thank you very much for this additional info. Oh by the way, I use coco peat..same thing except they’re not wood chips, instead they are pulverized wood. they burrow in it. They also like going into nest boxes..you can make some with cartons or just anything.

Hi, me and my friend found a rhino beetle on its back yesterday. It looked like it had been there for quite a while… we were quick to flip it back onto its feet, but after five small steps it fell over again. We tried again, and again, but all the time he would fall onto his back again. So we took him home and put him in a plastic enclosure, because we didn’t have any glass ones. If he lives we will put him in a glass one – but we don’t know what to feed him. We gave him chunks of nectarine and banana – but he the most he did was come near them. We left him over night, and now he looks weak and isn’t able to walk at all. We’ll get some fruit jelly – but is there any advise you could give us? We really want to save this beetle.

Now l am working in Thai,
where i live has lot of coconut tree, and lot of same kind of your beetle !

you know, in Thai and China, the beetle was seen a kind of Pest!
because it hurts the economy – the coconut tree.

It lives in side of the top of the coconut leaf stem and eats it out.
makes the tree die or coconuts malnutrition.
Not also coconut, but also the palm , the areca and dates tree,
can be hurt when the beetles “flood”.

According to the GOOGLE,
I am not sure about your beetles species,
how can you know “he” is not “Oryctes gnu Mohnike”
or
“Oryctes nasicornis przevalskyi”?

Cool, thanks. I have been looking around for information on feeding them. I could find nothing on frequency lol. I bought a decent size plastic case, 6″x12″. I put in about 4 inches of filling, not sure the proper name since it’s in Korea lol. I then placed in a small wooden piece and a jelly. On average, how long does a jelly last before spoiling? Thanks.

If it is hot weather a jelly will last 1-2 days. If the beetle is still eating the jelly even if it is already 2 days old, I don’t remove it. I only remove it when the beetle stops eating.

I also live in the Philippines my dad caught me one and I don’t know what it is I was so freaked out when he caught it after three hours we were making the tiny bug fly around my room.. Sir Martin, can you help me classify what type of beetle mine is?
