What’s an R4?? An r4 is a device that lets you download roms for the nintendo Ds. Hurray! Now us DS owners can also download games from the net like the PSP owners! But that’s not all, the R4 also lets you do other things like listen to music, read e-books, view pictures/comics and watch movies on your DS! Hurrah!!
My friend and I were out shopping and when we got to the videogame shop, we saw a sign advertising the R4. It was priced quite reasonably at 3,900+ pesos, about the price of two ORIGINAL game cartridges and it comes with free ten games.
We went to the saleslady who told us that all the R4 units they had were sold out. It’s a shame, my friend and I were really interested in the R4. The thing that was on my mind the most was the question: HOW DO I GET IT TO WORK?? After sniffing around on you tube, I found this tutorial on how the R4 works.

Some people have trouble putting roms in their NDS, I don’t know why.. Here’s a step by step tutorial. Click on the links to see the pictures.
1. Step 1. Download the rom to your desktop or wherever you want on your pc.
2. Step 2. Insert your USB adaptor with the 1 or 2bg memory stick/card into your usb port on your pc.
3. Step 3. Open the usb port to see the contents of your 2gb sd card. In my example you can see the games I have in my r4.
4. Unzip the rom file and drag the file name with a *.nds to the directory of your sd card.
5. Voila! Turn on your ds and start playing.

Just right click on any of the rar files and unzip them.. an *.nds file will appear.
Of course you need to have winrar installed to open those nasty *.rar files. Download it here.

HOW TO ADD SKINS OR THEMES TO YOUR R4.
1. go to http://mavisxp.com/r4 or http://www.ndsthemes.com and select a skin you like. I chose akira..
2. step 2. Download it to your desktop and unzip it. Select everything and press ctrl+c or right click, copy to Copy everything
3. Step 3. Look for the system folder on your r4 drive. Open it and find the themes folder.
Have fun.
SOME VERY STUPID PEOPLE DON’T KNOW HOW TO SCROLL THROUGH THEIR THEMES WHEN IT IS INSTALLED. When you are at the screen with the game, multimedia and slot 2 icons, just press select.

If your r4 is in chinese, then don’t bother DOWNLOADING the english version. Download the chinese version of the update. The english update won’t work on a chinese version.

If you have the problem where it says “Couldn’t Find _DS_MENU.DAT you need to make sure the R4 System is in the ROOT DIRECTORY of your MicroSD card. The CD it came with contains the “SYSTEM FILES” _system_ and some other DIRs. place these directly onto the microSD card, DO NOT PLACE THEM IN THEIR OWN DIRECTORY or nobody will see it.

You should try updating to the latest version of the r4 os. However your r4ds is most
likely inserted improperly!! You get the “touch the touchscreen to continue” if the sd
card isn’t inserted properly and the “data can’t be read” one if the r4 itself is improperly inserted.

You didnt insert the microsd card properly.. or the spring of the r4 is broken.
It is because the MicroSD card does not sit properly in the cartridge. It is a known problem for both R4 and M3. Just re-insert the sd card again firmly but gently. If it fails, buy a new r4.

We have collected all the sandman books FINALLY this past christmas. The whole series is just amazing. Right now I’m re-reading Watchmen by ALan Moore. It is my all time favorite story. I was in the book store today, and they had lots of Manga, which I haven’t gotten to read much of before. Any reccomendations of a good book to start with? A really good Manga to read is Lone Wolf and Cub.
It’s VERY GOOD. Pick up that Manga. I have the entire set its 30 volumes but it’s 5 dollars a book. Very good value.

It’s a weird little RPG. It gives you experience for the time you spent not playing the game.
SO if you dont play it for three days or 1 week, you get a lot of experience. WEIRD but cool.
I was playing that for awhile, then got caught up playing Grand Theft Auto 4 on my xbox. I need to pick it up again! I maxed out my pins the last time I picked it up…because of the experience when you dont play lol. I have a trip to New York City next week, so I cant wait til I get my time on the plane to just play without my girlfriend bothering me!

1. Adapter = the sd card is put into this adapter which is like a ds cartridge. You then put the adapter into the ds slot.
2. Expansion card is just an ordinary SD card with the latest version of r4 software downloaded off the internet for FREE . DO NOT BUY THIS. IT IS DOWNLOADABLE FOR FREE.

just keep opening all other folders until you find the files that have the background images.

In the _systems_ folder, if you don’t have a “themes” folder, create one. Then in that folder create 12 folders named “theme##”, where the ## represent increasing numbers from 01 to 12. For example, the first folder will be theme01, then theme02 etc. The R4 will only take 12 themes. Then go to ndsthemes.com and download themes. When you expand the file, copy all the files into the theme folder, except for the txt file, which is usually some advertisement for the website – this takes up space. After installing, put it all into the R4 and DS, turn it on, and you can cycle through each of the themes at the R4 title screen by pressing Select, then A. I hope this works.

My stupid desktop hard drive failed and the Best Buy people wanted US89.00 dollars for a new 120gb hard drive, 129.00 to re-install windows, 199.00 to transfer over my old files to the new hard drive, and 49.00 for installation! What a load of crap! My Aplle Ibook laptop also broke, there is some chip causing it to overheat and its ruined. I had to go buy a new desktop computer! Its ok, but doesnt have an s-video out slot, so I can’t hook it up to my tv when I watch movies online anymore. Im so pissed.

I just bought a new R4, I think I got the old version of it. I downloaded all the kernel files and a game file and uploaded them on the SD card, when I plugged my SD card in the R4 and the R4 in my DS, it just kees saying “Loading…”. what can I do??

1.) is your r4 english or chinese? If you have a chinese r4, of course downloading the ENGLISH one wont work.
OH and this guide is FOR R4 VERSION 1 if you have version 2 onwards, it wont work!!
These are NOT my updates. These are the r4 sites updates. I am not the one who made them.
2.) Follow the instructions properly and read the tutorials and look at the pictures. There’s no way you can mess up upgrading your r4 if you simply follow instructions.
Basically THIS is what you want to do:
How to update R4:
After downloading and decompressing the new updated files, there will be one moonshl folder and two files _DS_MENU.DAT, _DS_MSHL.NDS.Copy these files to the root directory of TF card to replace the former files
That’s all.
3.) If all else fails, format your sd card, and reinstall all the files from the CD that came with your r4.

when you first start your r4 there are three buttons, BE SURE YOU CLICK ON/touch the GAME button NOT MEDIA.

Downloaded again the summon night from frozen-roms.in, turn it on and off and on again after reinserting the DS card. My son got the same message:

1. you dont have any memory left on your card. delete some games and try again.
2. Did you NOT agree to make the save file when the game starts up? It wont work if theres no save file.

Martin!! I must make a recommendation for a new flash card to try. Very simple to use, and Ive had even better compatability then with R4. Its called Top Toy DS. Im not sure how much you spend there for an R4, but here it cost me 40 US to get it shipped to me. The TopToyDS was shipped to me from Hong Kong for 20 dollars total for everything!!! I bought it at dealextreme.com You must see this website! Cool things on it very cheap! I purchased a Extra Life mushroom bobblehead and a toptoyds.

Some of the games multiplayer modes don’t work on the r4. Just find games that work and play those instead.

Whenever i download a file from ndsthemes.com, i put it on my desktop and use winrar to extract it. yet when i click “extract here” a little popup says “the archive is either in unknown format or damaged” and it says that for every one i download from ndsthemes.com. Even on the ones that are most downloaded by other ppl. So i am assuming it is incomplete because when i extract it, there are only 2 or 3 extracted files when there should be 5. HEELLLLLPPPP PLLEAASSEE!!!!

All of these R4-III or R4 V3 or R4-SDHC are all fakes. They are clones of the actual R4, and are of lesser quality. They have also been known to screw up your DS. Get the real thing, man!
This forum (http://r4ds-forums.com/viewtopic.php?f=38&t=1182) can direct you to sites that sell the actual R4, which is getting harder and harder to find.
Also, R4 does not support SDHC cards, only regular microSD up to 2GB. If you card supports more than that, it’s a fake.

okay.. moonshell is the media player for NDS. clicking on MEDIA starts up moonshell.
are you using a real mp3? I mean, not a WMA or anything renamed to mp3?
Do you play the mp3 by going to MEDIA, which starts up moonshell?
If you place your mp3 in the games folder, of course it won’t be recognized because MOONSHELL hasn’t started up yet.
my moonshell is ver. 1.71 and r4 is 1.18 which is I believe the latest for both.
I followed your instructions on how to put in mp3 so my Music folder is under the _systems_ menu in the Media section.
My mp3 should be real mp3, they work on my itunes

I tried to put a theme onto my DS, but couldn’t find the ‘themes’ folder you were talking about. So I made a ‘themes’ folder in settings, and made another folder ‘theme01′ inside that. I then transferred the files into ‘theme01′ but when I turn on the DS, its the same. The theme didn’t change.

I brought a R4 for my son and I download Ninja Gaiden from on eof the site.
And I managed to extract it using WINRAR and there file from Xpa-ngds.rar , Xpa-ngds.R00 … so on until Xpa-ndgs.R20. I extracted Xpq-Ngds.rar and there is Xpa.ngds.nds…
If i extracted the next Xpa-ngds.R00 it give me another file Xpa.ngds.nds…
I am getting lost on what to copy to the roms since all there are mutliple file and each extract give me the same file name. I have search the web the whole morning and can’t find any solutions.

1. Yes, I extracted the downaloaded file and it had shelf create a folder : 2189 Ninja _gaiden_Dargon_USA_NDS-XPA.
2. Inside Folder: there are multiple RAR file .. XPA_Ndgs.rar to XPA_ndgs.R20.. Twenty one of them.
3. I extracted the first XPA_NDgs.RAR file and it output a Xpa.Ngds.Nds file.
4. I copy all the File, the twenty file to a Folder : Game
5. Then, I click on the first XPA.Ngds.Nds and extracted again.
6. Finally, there is one XPA.Ngds.NDs file on the game folder.
7. IS that the file ? IS that the way to extract mutliple file?
I will try to use that file tonite to witness whether it work or not ?
Maybe u can advise me a teh correct way to extracted using WINRAR..

a couple questions…
1) do you have to power off your DS to go from multimedia section to games, or is there a specific button combination to get you back to games? i know you can go from games to multimedia, but not sure if you can go from multimedia to games without turning the DS off… ?
2) i noticed on some videos that you can change the loading screen in moonshell to make it look like it is loading something like vista… i havent been able to find any info on how to change this, would you know how to do this?

Hi and thanks for your tutorial! I just got my brand new R4, loaded the files onto the SD card and put it into my DS and was able to see the GUI menu. I turned off my DS and put it back into the computer to load a game onto it, but when I put the R4 back into the DS all I get is a very faded Nintendo start-up screen. And the “touch screen to start” doesn’t even show up. I tried reformatting my SD card and re-installing the software a few times but no luck. What happened?? Has my R4 already died on me??? you didn’t reinsert your sd card properly into your r4 or your r4 into your ds. Reinsert it properly. It may take a couple of tries.

Your tut has helped a lot but I have one small issue. The games work perfectly but they don’t save. I see the .sav files in the root of the mem stick but when trying to load a game there is no data to load. Any ideas?

Another poss reason for that is,
1. The FAKE R4 cards dont work with the kernal after v1.14 and therefore doesnt load. Try a previous version.
2. Try changing the kernal root file extentions eg .dat and nds to caps eg .DAT .NDS (not the game rom extentions) as this prob is solved this way on the ’so called’ fake R4II cards and the lamo n5 cards…

The r4 can play ZOO TYCOON 2. JUST FOLLoW THE INSTRUCTIONS EXACTLY AND YOU CAN RUN YOUR GAME
if you don’t follow the instructions, you wont be able to run your game.

my r4 isnt like yours! when i start up it has 3 buttons: games; multimedia; and boot slot 2. i have no idea where 2 put my winrar, and wherever i put it, i cant unzip! i cant get 2 my music folder, or vid! i never could anyway. I can only reach them on my computers. the only thing i can do is get a rom (it has to be a .zip) and drag it into my games folder! anything else i do dosent show up! do u think its a virus? I think your 2GB card is bootleg. Anyway u should delete games using your PC not through your r4 to ake sure the games are really gone

Hey martin, pretty cool site. But I’ve been itching for Chrono trigger and Mother 3, so where and how do i get the roms in ENGLISH cuz they have japanese only of both, and my Mac isnt very… patch – friendly.

You need to patch sonic and chrono trigger. I’m sorry there’s no way to play those without a patch. however try searching google for the already patched roms.

if it is in the working list you have a corrupt rom loaded. delete it from your r4, download a fresh copy and load it up again.

I have 1 2gb and 2 4gb SD cards and none of them will work when i drag the files onto it. I have tried it with a R4 and R4 Advanced cartridge and they just keep saying LOADING…..
Please help as I have already set up 4 R4’s 6 months ago and they gave me no problem.
the sd cards need to be formatted first.
BTW r4 supports only up to 2GB..

hi martin. i just purchased a r4 sdhc from cdrking. It came with only an adapter, with no cd. I bought a 4gb & 1 gb microsd. I tried downloading the firmware but still it says loading… i tried the 1gb but still the same. Do you have any idea where to download the software/os for this? and can you tell how to do it? Ive been downloading different versions this past few weeks but its still the same. Im running it on my macbook…do you think it has an effect because I’m not using winrar and a different os? Star Wars : The Clone Wars – Jedi Alliance Fix ?
I found that if I installed the cheat file USRCHEAT.DAT and removed the CHEAT.DAT file from my R4DS using firmware 1.18, then programs like “Star Wars : The Clone Wars – Jedi Alliance” and “Ben 10 : Protector Of Earth” both worked without doing any patches.
The file USRCHEAT.DAT was included in the cheat file “12-24-08_All.rar” available from :-
cheats.gbatemp.net
Try it and see if it works for you.

Yes.. NOT using winrar has an effect. YOU NRED TO EXTRACT THE FILES.
How are you extracting the files? IF you don’t extract them they wont work. They’re files that your computer wont be able to recognize.

Hi, I just discovered this site and was wondering if you could answer this question for me.
So I bought the R4 a couple of days ago, uploaded games and stuff onto it and they all work perfectly fine. But I had a weird/scary problem in regards to the music player.
I uploaded some songs onto my R4 and 90% of them play perfectly. I did this by simply going to the systems file, making a folder called “Music” and pasting my music onto it. However, 10% of my songs were funky. Whenever it started playing them, rather than playing the song, it began playing this horror-like sound with a wolf growling and stuff. Kinda freaky, if you know what i mean… Is there anyway to fix it?

I think it has to do with how the mp3s were converted or something.
I don’t have that problem and I’ve never experienced something like that.
Just try re-uploading the music.. It’s possible that the music files got corrupted in the uploading process.
If it doesn’t work… try downloading new mp3s.

if your turned on the cheats, they’re already activated. You don’t get a notice in pokemon that they are on. It’s up to you to notice if they are working or not.
For example you turned on the cheat 999999 pokeballs in the r4 menu.
You have to check your pokeball bag in the game if you have really gotten 999999 pokeballs. No “cheat activated” message is going to appear.
I have a major problem. I bought the R4 SDHC Revoluntion for DS. It is suppose to take 4gb microsSDHC cards but when i place the cartrige in the Ds all it says is “loading”. Now I had a regular R4 card and use and downloaded games on a 2gb and had no problem. Can you tell me what the heck is wrong here.

simple, the r4 doesn’t take 4GB cards EVER.
It does not have 4GB support. 2 GB is the maximum.
Now when i put my 2gb with games in the new R4 MicroSDHC it still says “loading”. I also tried it with the other new R4 MicroSDHC and it still says the same. But when i put the 2gb in the old R4 (regular) it works. So does that mean that both my new R4 MicroSDHC cartridges are a piece of crap?
try formatting the card and try it in the new one. I personally never had this problem. I have an r4 for two years now…
btw… it’s possible the new “r4″ are pirated versions… r4 was so succesful that other people copied it and made junk like r4 version 2 etc…

in general, electronics here are more expensive than in the usa. I suggest getting your ds from canada since there’s warranty and stuff. once your ds breaks down here in the philippines, iyou have to buy another ds.. T_T
However, it is easier to buy an r4 here than in the states.
When your cousin gets here never pay more than 40 dollars for an r4. Theyre about 1,800 pesos.

I don’t do movies for r4. I think it’s useless. Save the space for games instead.
If you have read the tutorial above, you would have seen the information that ordinary music mp3s can be placed inside your r4 and you don’t have to go to “special” websites. I even put up a tutorial on how to do it.

You have to run moonshell.. There should be an icon in your games folder that says moonshell.
Run moonshell then ou can open your media files.
I am in the process of making one of these ds cards for my husbands nephew and I was wondering if they work like new games, you know with the same picture quality and all levels of the game? Also are there any updates i have to put on the card in order for the games to constantly be played? Yeah, and also the R4 is very primitive for a flashcart and hasn’t been supported for months. The best ones today are EDGE, DSTT and Acekard. Those are cheap too.

I got an R4 at gameboyz @ Pacific Mall Markham Ontario for $50! It works fine and came with a 2gb micro sd card with at least 50 games on it.
It only works on my lite, not my phat, but that’s okay. It also came with a USB connector, a cd manual, an adapter for the micro sd card and had moonshell installed on it, already.
Also, it plays movies and music

You can’t. It is not possible without doing a hardware mod.
Hey Martin,
Have you tried GTA Chinatown Wars on your DS? I have, and the original ROM did not work past the save file error screen. I tried patching it, and it got to the screen where it started to load the game, but it froze there as well. Do you have any suggestions? There are a couple of other patching methods, which I have not tested out as of yet. Also, I did try the original with the patch on a DS simulator on PC, and it worked. Keep up the great site!

You’ve got to follow the directions exactly that’s on the page, but it works.
I don’t know if this patch will help with any other system other than the R4, but I think there’s other links on the page.
I hope this helps anyone else having problems with it.

I decided to try the r4 update 1.19u (at my own risk, i know). and it works fine so far, but i do not like it nearly as well as 1.18. so i tried to hook my memory card back up to my mac so i could put the old version back on (i have all my data backed up, just in case i wouldnt like it). now my mac is not recognizing my sd card at all even though it still works in the r4. is there anything i can do to get my mac to recognize it? even if i have to somehow clear off or reformat the whole disc i will, that’s fine, but i dont know what to do at this point. can you please help me? any help is much appreciated!!!
Hi again! I figured it out, so you can just disregard my stupidity, lol. I found my sd card in disk utility and just reformatted it. Once it was done, it popped right up like i jist plugged it in! So this can act as an EXTRA warning to those wanting to try 1.19u, right? Hehe, a learning experience! Thanks for posting this awesome blog on the r4, it can be hard to find info from knowledgeable sources sometimes. Thanks again!

Hi. I followed ur instructions on how to put MP3’s in the R4. But wen i go to open the system/music folder it says that there r 0 files in it. Why is this?
i think that first, you have to open moonshell (if your moonshell is a selectable icon in your ds games folder) then open the music folder then play the mp3.
Just try again.
My Moonshell loads up when I select the multimedia icon. Then i go to system then music. Thats where i get the problem.
maybe your music is a “protected” version. One that can only be played on your ipod or your pc where you downloaded it.
1. r4 accepts only mp3s. Make sure it is an mp3
2. make sure the mp3 doesnt have any copy protection
3. make sure your moonshell is the latest version.

help, i just put a game in my micro SD from R4, then i tried to open it using my DS, but loading is very long.and nothing was appearing on the screen just black. so, i tried to open it again using our PC. then a window popped up saying that the micro SD needs to be formatted. what should i do? do i need to buy a new one?

first of all, make sure you’ve read the guide. I posted above.
#2. format your memory card and reinstall the software that came with it.
#3. Update the r4 using the guide written above.
#4. Check the r4 games compatibility list also in the guide above.
#5. Make sure the game is unzipped before puttting it in r4.
To me R4 card substitutes the need for UMD in Nintendo so its really useful that way.
ok…i really need your help when i got my R4 i was stuck on 3 days to find out what to do…then i realised that i needed a firmware or a kernal i tried that for 2months! then i finally got it but apparently it said M3 ds simply so i shifted on working on that. later i well i cant say it or explain it right but i think a patched R4 firmware and then it said r4 when i turned it on. i was happy…till i read the big bold letters that said THE HARDWARE IS NOT COMPATIBLE i tried as many as things as possible i did format it to fat32 and i think my r4 is v1 so martin help me asap?

you can change your themes manually by pressing.. SELECT at the GAME, MULTIMEDIA and BOOT SLOT 2 MODE.
I guess this is what you mean by “manual” mode.

The main black “Loading…” screen freezes!
It happens everytime I turn it on.

0. make sure your sd card is inserted properly.
1. reformat your r4
2. reinstall the software
3. Update the software (guide also found above)
5. Put in the mp3 after reading instructions carefully

If you’ve done all of that, Moonshell should be in your games folder as Moonshell.nds
I hope you didn’t delete your moonshell.nds.
Open your moonshell.nds and from there, navigate to where your Mp3 folder is and open your mp3

that’s because you have to access your multimedia through a file called moonshell.nds (it’s found in your games folder)
It should be there.
Since the sites for the games are being deleted are there any sites they haven’t got to yet that i can still download games from frozen-roms doesnt work download-ds dont work is there any good ones left
lol… I don’t know what you’re talking about. frozen roms is up and kicking and there are hundreds of ds roms sites out there. It’s as easy as typing in the game name then adding ds rom at the end.. Like..

I wonder if you can help me, I bought two R4 cards for DS. I downloaded the software from R4 site, Dragged the 4 files, moonmemo moonshl2 R4iMenu R4.dat to the F, drive, USB, but when I put micro card into R4 card and then into DS, I get a message, An Error Has Occurred, Please hold button and turn of,etc, Am I doing something wrong or what else can I do, or are the cards just not working.
Can I download games to this card, I downloaded games and opened with winrar, I get a folder that looks like a notebook, I put this on card, byt still same error code, DS will not open.
Any advice or help would be very grateful,

I bought and received an R4DS card. No disc came with it. I went to the R4 site and downloaded the latest firmware (1.18). I unzipped it and then dragged the four files to my microSD card (after formatting it to FAT32 as recommended). I then dragged and dropped my games to the SD card. When I insert the SD card into the R4 card and then place it into my DS, turn it on….. All I get is a black screen that says:
Loading……..
Anybody have any ideas?

you didnt insert the microsd card properly.. or the spring of the r4 is broken.
Its not firmware related. It is because the MicroSD card does not sit properly in the cartridge. It is known problem for both R4 and M3.
I had gotten a 2GB R4, my friend had put games on it previously. I now try to make it so i can download and put games that i want on it. The card works fine in the DS, however when trying to plug it into my computer via the usb or the card reader computer does not recognize it?
maybe you should try putting the card in the usb properly?

1. Maybe you’re putting it upside down, wrong way up, etc?
2. Is the usb reader working properly? is it broken?
3. Is your computer even turned on?
4. Did you try using a separate card reader to open your sd card?

it’s ok if the igvtagv1 isn’t there… Don’t pay attention to it. as long as you can play the song it’s ok.

you must put the files in the theme folder.

r4i is better than r4 ds.. it’s for the nintendo dsi but is compatible with r4. r4 is not being updated anymore.
